Block 1  

Block 1 was used by the Union to house Confederate Prisoners that had taken the Oath of Allegiance.

Prisoners needed to sign this Oath before they could be released after the war.  If they signed it before the war ended, they would be considered traitors by their fellow Confederate Officers and were treated very badly.  Therefore, the Union placed them in Block 1 to protect them.   


Block 1 has not been excavated, but the latrine from 1864 used by the occupants of Block 1 was excavated. In this latrine, we discovered many items that the residents of Block 1 had access to that the others did not.
